Live from New York, er, Hampshire...it's Mr Toast!

Yes, that really is me standing next to Jimmy Fallon aboard the Lake Winnipesaukee cruise ship Mt. Washington earlier today. Much to my surprise, I met the former Saturday Night Live star and Weekend Update co-anchor while he was in New Hampshire enjoying some R&R time away from his hectic schedule in New York. Jimmy was quite gracious and welcomed me to visit with him for about 10-15 minutes or so before he went down to dinner with his girlfriend and her family, who live in the area. When I asked him somewhat incredulously, "what the hell are you doing on the Mt. Washington?", his deadpan response was "Rehab." We talked about everything from Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch's new NBC pilot 30 Rock, his own departure from SNL and his next movie, to my pulmonary fibrosis (which we referred to as "Jerry Lewis Disease"). He seemed quite interested in the fact that I had been a disk jockey in the past, and when I told him that my last gig was as an engineer for an NBC-network television station, he put his arm around me and told me I was "one of the family".

Funny guy, and a delightful cap to a fantastic day on the lake. This has been a great vacation so far, and it's not over yet!

    Awesome. That's so cool.

I met Dave Matthews once, in Barnes & Noble, but I didn't know who he was then. He's not big in England. It made it all the more hilarious, as I was asking for his autograph for a friend of mine. I said something like "hi, my friend hiding over there behind that bookshelf says you're famous, can I have your autograph for him? He's too shy. Sorry, I'm English, I don't know who you are." meanwhile, my friend cringed and ran off, and Dave burst out laughing. :-) (My 'innocent angel' smile..)

Dave Matthews is nice. He also gets his haircut in the same place Robert does, apparently. He lives about 3 blocks away from me.

Glad you're having a good time.
April has a good point. Rehab with a glass? ;-)

Actually, I'm fairly certain the "rehab" line was meant to be a joke. He was pretty much like you see him in the picture, always "on" in a jokingly sarcastic class-clown sort of way. He seemed to be like that with his friends even before I walked up to speak to him, so evidently that's his "normal".

A testament to his good nature, though, was that I thought I was able to decently hold up my end of the conversation. Most other celebrities I've ever met have intimidated the shit out of me, and I had no idea what to talk about. But he didn't seem aloof at all, and appeared genuinely interested in what I had to say. I felt at ease and things flowed pretty naturally, which seemed pretty cool when I thought about it afterwards.

So yeah, a funny and nice guy, and one of the last people I ever expected to meet here!

I am so jealous that you met Jimmy Falon. I think he's cute in a boyish high-school sort of way.

Wow! Meeting Morgan Freeman and Jimmy Falon is a vacation that I am sure you won't forget. If you make it to Maine maybe you will run into Stephen King too.....if you do, I want Kings autograph!
